Beyond its educational and research activities, the University of Crete contributes directly and indirectly to the social and cultural life of the two cities that host it—Rethymno and Heraklion. Cultural and athletic activities, volunteering initiatives, and lifelong learning programs are integral and ongoing functions of the University, along with the dissemination of knowledge to the school community through visits to the University and its Museums.
